Ranch Hand 2022

Montana Mexican John Ranch (200 pair cattle operation) located 6 miles West of Harlowton, MT is looking for a ranch hand. The current working team is made up of 2 full time employees, and seasonal help in hay season. Irrigation is managed with pivots. We are looking for cattle and farming knowledge. Mechanical and welding skills are a plus. Must have experience in managing a cow/calf operation including calving, managing cattle grazing, feeding, shots, vaccinating, sorting, penning, moving, winter-feeding, vet care and branding. All cattle records are recorded on the online CattleMax record keeping system. All cattle are worked with 4x4s and quads. We do not own any horses.

Regarding farming, we have 250+ acres under pivots. We have 260 acres of dryland farming (alfalfa, sanfoin and barley) and 100 plus acres of dryland grass. Regarding equipment you must be able to operate, maintain and repair farm equipment, machinery, tools, including tractors, loaders, swathers, sprayers, backhoes, skid steers, and excavator. Equipment owned: 1 New Holland 664 Baler, 1 New Holland Windrower, 2 JD Round Bale 566 Balers, 2 MacDon Windrowers, 3- JD late model tractors (5093E, 7730 and 6150), 3 Dodge Trucks 2500,3500, and 5500, ATV’s and Quads for ranch use, Hay Buster Hay Processor, Hay Buster Rock picker, 2 Sprayer set ups (300 & 500 Gal), 4 Cat Skid Steers/ 1 Cat Excavator and 1 Case Backhoe. Additional work will include maintenance and repair of fences. General new fence work is contracted out. Must communicate well via email/text and must have a smart phone to communicate with ranch manager (ranch owner, Steve Coale). The ranch owner makes all the long term and intermediate term decisions, along with marketing of calf crop and any hay purchases or sales. The owner is absent from the ranch, but easy to reach and communicate with as needed. He is also at the ranch often and does help in some aspects of haying and working cattle during busy times. All hunting and fishing on the ranch is limited to friends and family of the owner. There is no hunting or fishing for employees of the ranch.

You must pass criminal and drug background checks and have a valid driver’s license with no restrictions. Must relocate to Harlowton, MT and live on the ranch. Housing provided, utilities, ½ beef, and potential year bonuses based on calving and farming success. Bonuses have been paid each of the last 4 years. Salary depends on experience, stability, and references. Wanting to hire ASAP.

Note: All cattle are moved by 4x4s and quads. No horses are owned or used on the ranch.

Temporary help for haying season 2022

Person must have experience operating all haying equipment including : John Deere tractors, Cat Skid steers, John Deer/New Holland balers and  MacDon/New Holland swathers. Position will be available starting around in Mid July give or take a week and run through Mid September. Maybe slightly sooner or latter depending on season and weather. Must have own housing and transportation to and from Ranch. Pay rate will range between $15.00 to $18.00 per hour, depending on experience. English speaking required.

We are looking for someone who is honest, dependable, hard working, and motivated. Duties include haying, greasing and maintaining equipment. This positions requires a pre-background check and drug screening. Please email a resume and references.
